The Backwater Letter
Eleven nights aboard a rice-barge converted to two cabins, drifting the canals between Alleppey and Kumarakom. Hosted by the Mathew family, who have worked this water since 1962.
For forty years we have arranged unhurried passages through the backwaters, cloud forests and tea islands of the monsoon belt — for travelers who have earned the right to pause.
The monsoon has always been our guide. Not the obstacle, but the point of the journey — the rain that empties the coast, the mist that hides the road, the long, unhurried hours that follow.
We do not chase the highlight reel. Our shortest itinerary is nine nights; our longest, twenty-three. The pace is set for those who no longer need to prove they have been.
Each route is built around the shoulder seasons and the rains — when the coast empties, the forests close their canopy, and a room above the river costs what a room ought to cost.
Every passage is arranged with families, captains and guesthouse owners we have known for two generations. No commission chain, no activity desk, no commission theatre.
Early starts are optional. Boats depart when the tide is right, not when the schedule demands. Ground-floor rooms, evening meals at 6:30, and a doctor's telephone in every town we visit.
We arrange between forty and sixty passages a year. Below are three that still have open berths in the coming season. Each is shaped around the rains — not in spite of them.
The full catalogue, with dates, fares and the captain's letter for each route, is available on the catalogue page.
"The rain is not the obstacle. It is the reason."
Eleven nights aboard a rice-barge converted to two cabins, drifting the canals between Alleppey and Kumarakom. Hosted by the Mathew family, who have worked this water since 1962.
Nine nights in the cloud forest above Ubud, in three guesthouses owned by the same extended family. Walks at dawn, massage at four, dinner at seven. No phones after eight.
Twelve nights between three colonial-era tea bungalows above Nuwara Eliya. Private driver, a cook who has been with us since 1991, and the long, drifting mists of the Uva.
Fares, dates, the captain's letter, the doctor's telephone, and the precise arrangements for every itinerary we are able to arrange this season.
